Indiana 13-Year-old Dead from a Gunshot - No One Responsible

A 13-year-old Middletown boy was shot dead Monday in what officials believe was an accident, Anderson Police Department officials said Wednesday.
The shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. Monday in the 5700 block of Park Road in Anderson. Logan Armendariz died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was shot by what police described as an "underage family member."
Anderson Police Department reminded people of the importance of securing weapons in their homes. Anderson residents can get free gun lock from the police department.
The parents took some precautions, some.  That's what the police chief said.  But what the hell good are those precautions if a kid can outsmart them?
Dad should be in jail. That would go a long way to teach all the other gun-rights nuts to be more careful.  That would do far more than the insipid reminders from the police that parents need to be more careful.

  1. "Anderson police tell Fox 59 that the boy’s younger brother shot him. According to investigators, the brother got inside a locked closet and a locked gun safe. The safe held five guns–four of which were unloaded. One revolver had a single bullet in the chest."

The firearms were double locked, but the failure was in key control. When the guns are locked with a key lock, the keys literally become the guns.

  2. You've gone from wanting to take away gun rights to wanting to put Dad in jail. What's next?

    1. An exception to his stance on the death penalty.

    2. When someone acts irresponsibly with guns they should immediately go to jail. Then the investigation can take its own sweet time.

Why would you oppose that, Greg. You want the same leeway shown to you when you do something stupid?

    3. Mike,

Again, there are basically two reasons for pre trial detention. To insure appearance and prevent further offenses. Everyone starts with presumption of innocence until conviction. That means even if you're certain someone committed the crime, you don't get to start punishing them until after the trial. Pre trial detention is decided by the prosecutor and law enforcement.
You often claim that law enforcement and prosecutors actively work to minimize or even refuse to prosecute gun crimes, yet you want to give law enforcement the freedom to decide who gets a carry permit through a may issue permit system. How can they be trusted for one, and not the other?

    4. You're asking why he would oppose someone going to jail before the investigation? Do you really need to ask that?

    5. Stop lying about me, Mikeb. I want the police to determine first if a crime has been committed and then to find out who the likely perpetrator is.

    6. "If?"

Whenever a kid is killed some adult is responsible. You gun rights fanatics have the laws so slanted in your favor that you can legally get away with all kinds of irresponsible shit.

    7. ss, that's a good point. The cops and prosecutors who cannot be trusted to arrest and charge gun criminals because they themselves are gun nuts, would not be the same ones deciding on the may issue licenses, at least I should hope not.

    8. TS, there are many crimes for which you're locked up immediately and then negotiate bail the following day. All gun misuse should be like that.

    9. Mikeb, you act as though your proposals were already law. At the moment, they largely are not. I'm pleased about that, but we'll move on. The police have to determine if a crime has been committed under our current law. Accidents are treated differently from other kinds of acts. You'll stick on the word, accident, but under current law, some things that you want called negligence are accidents.

I want the police to follow the law, not what you wish to be the law. If the law changes--and there's nothing tyrannical about that law--then the police can apply the new rules. But complaining that the police do what present law tells them to do is just silly.

    10. There are plenty of laws about child endangerment and felony recklessness and what have you. The problem is they are only sporadically enforced.
