Mississippi Abolishes Slavery Finally

Mississippi Abolishes Slavery. In 2013. WHAT?
Notions Capital

On February 7, 2013, the state of Mississippi officially ratified the Thirteenth Amendment, abolishing slavery. Of course the Constitutional amendment was adopted 168 years ago, on December 6, 1865, after ratification by 27 other states, but the Mississippi legislature, miffed that Magnolia State slave owners weren't compensated for their loss of human property, voted against it.
And some people wonder why we generalize in mocking the deep south.

  1. Yes, I do wonder. Mississippi rejoined the Union, meaning that it was under the authority of the Constitution, which abolished slavery. This recent vote has no actual consequence.

  2. Oh yes, an almost 150 year old vote that was never corrected since the amendment went into effect, rendering the vote moot, is a wonderful reason to have prejudice against southerners today.

To the best of my knowledge, Rome has never apologized for all of it's imperialistic conquest of everything from Britain to Parthia, and yet you choose to live there with those unrepentant, imperialistic warmongers? How dare you!
