Arizona 9-Year-old Shoots Himself while Hunting with Granddad - No Charges

Local news reports

A 9-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the leg Sunday morning, while hunting with his grandfather.

According to Carol Capas with the Cochise County Sheriff's Department, the boy was airlifted to UAMC with non-life threatening injuries.

Capas says the boy was climbing over a fence near Cascabel Road and Farnsworth Field northeast of Benson, when his rifle accidentally discharged.

The boy is currently in surgery as a result of the injuries.
This is a case of disgraceful negligence and stupidity on the part of granddad. He's a danger and should never be allowed around kids or guns again.

  1. It would seem that this may have been one of the few truly accidental discharges, but does that stop your furor for taking rights? Heck no! You declare that the grandfather was negligent; you don't say how he was negligent--presumably it was in taking the child hunting in the first place.

This strong desire to take away gun rights, which is how you often phrase it, is disturbing. If we tried to take away any other right from someone based on some form of negligence, you would be screaming. E.g. What if a bill was proposed to take gun and VOTING rights away for negligence in publishing a libelous story--e.g. Dan Rather and the fake story about Bush and the Texas ANG?

    DUI? No voting rights, etc.

The screams of Voter Suppression would be deafening. And they should be. Any attempts to strip people of their rights without due process and a Damn good reason that can stand up to a strict scrutiny test should be met with the same opposition, whatever that right is.

    2. Yo, tom, I was just pulling out an example of journalistic malfeasance that would affect someone on the leftward side of the spectrum as a way of illustrating a point.

Your response is a non-sequitur--because I can acknowledge that Rather published a false story without fact checking and then stood by it after it was debunked, I suddenly am a mouth foaming, pro-Iraq war person?

Please calm down, re-read what I wrote, and realize that what I'm saying applies as much to your right to protest unjust wars as much as any other right. We should shame and ostracize those who would try to shut down protests, and we should do the same for those who try to have a chilling effect on other rights, or to take them away from others for any pretext they can come up with.

  2. It may be that the grandfather was negligent. That said, there is not enough information in the article to draw a fact based conclusion as to exactly what happened or what the consequences should be.
