More Propaganda about Women Buying Guns

Local news in Tulsa OK reports that more women are getting into guns. The first bit of evidence for this claim is that in December, there were a  record number of background checks done in the NICS. That's been thoroughly debunked recently.  As a means of assessing gun sales it has serious flaws.

The next bit of statistical proof is a vague claim of 400% increase in a women's-only concealed carry class. This is just one class, and the original number of participants which supposedly increased so much was not mentioned.  Maybe it was 2, and now it's 8.

In other words the whole article is blatant propaganda.  Why?  Well, in order to mainstream gun ownership by saying even the women are getting into it.  The truth is far from that.  Take the SHOT Show for example.  You know how the women who attended it were called: Booth Babes.  Check out TTAG, you can find dozens of them in spite of Robert Farago's New Year's resolution to quit using sex to sell his site.

What's your opinion? Is gun ownership basically a man's game? Yes or no.

  1. Since I began teaching CCW courses 4 years ago, 68% of my students have been women.

A local gunshop offers a "woman's only" CCW class every other month. Women still attend the regular classes held monthly as well. The owner of the shop and lead CCW trainer (who is female, BTW) told me that in 2004 that most all participants in the CCW class were men. Some women would attend with their husbands. In 2011, most participants were women.

  2. Women are far better at what are sometimes referred to as soft skills, the ability to talk their way out of conflict, than men, as a generality.

Women are also better at so-called low power negotiation and strategy - they can win from positions other than dominance.

This translates into, again as a generality, less reliance on either force or dominance than men use.

    2. I tend to agree with dog gone's assertion here. That is why I recently sent my wife over to confront our neighbors about their profanity while working in their yard. They were gracious during her presence; unfortunately they promptly escalated from profanity to obscenity and insults ... perhaps because they figured what is a woman going to do about it????? Then I had to resort to dominance.

So I agree with letting the ladies work their womanly wiles first. If the other party is receptive, great. Just keep in mind that some people see women as "weak" and won't hesitate to strike out.

  3. Look, Annie Oakley Dog Gone, "I can do anything better than you" is a song about one person. Your statements about all women are no better than your statements about all gun owners.

    Mikeb302000,

Making a disputed claim isn't the same thing as thoroughly debunking something.

  4. I will add that my wife is a new firearms enthusiast/owner and concealed carry licensee as of late 2010. And we were surprised to discover that one of her lady friends is a new concealed carry licensee as of 2010 or so. But we really don't disclose that to hardly anyone so we are not sure how many more friends might be new firearms owners much less concealed carry licensees.

So here is the up side to firearms ownership. Once or twice a year my wife and that friend join two or three other ladies for a weekend get-away at a secluded cottage on a lake. Just three years ago, all of them were disarmed and incredibly vulnerable. Any deviant attacking them now will have to overcome two armed women. The odds of that happening are about nil.

Oh, and I almost forgot that we purchased a new rifle for my daughter who wants (and will be old enough) to hunt next year.

    1. I guess that's better than the 4-year-old.

My impression of you is that she'll be in good hands. Enjoy.
