Update on Casablanca

For those of you who have a little bit of discretionary time to spend today and who have this option on cable, given our recent discussions about this movie, I thought it worth mentioning that Casablanca will be shown today on Turner Classic Movies. (Time shown is Eastern standard time)

CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:
D: Michael Curtiz. Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, Dooley Wilson, Marcel Dalio, S. Z. Sakall, Joy Page, Helmut Dantine, Curt Bois. Everything is right in this WW2 classic of war-torn Morocco with elusive nightclub owner Rick (Bogart) finding old flame (Bergman) and her husband, underground leader Henreid, among skeletons in his closet. Rains is marvelous as dapper police chief, and nobody sings ``As Time Goes By'' like Dooley Wilson. Three Oscars include Picture, Director, and Screenplay (Julius & Philip Epstein and Howard Koch). Our candidate for the best Hollywood movie of all time. Spawned short-lived TV series in the 1950s and the 1980s. Also shown in computer-colored version.

Colored version? No thanks.  I'm also looking forward to enjoying many of the same cast members, notably Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre, in The Maltese Falcon as well today; I'm a Dash Hammet fan.

  1. I agree with you about colorizing black-and-white movies. Orson Welles is reported to have retained rights over "Citizen Kane" and to have said that Ted Turner could keep his goddamned Crayolas off his movie.

  2. I got a dvd for xmas (laurel and hardy) with a choice of watching it colorized or black and white. Not a difficult choice.

I literally don't know anyone who likes colorization.

  3. Agreed. Black and white films should stay that way.
